Sometimes, it takes a lifetime to figure out the reason we were put on this earth. For David, the teenage shepherd boy we meet in The Wonder Project’s new series House Of David, the search is short … and successful.
“Show me a purpose. Show me who I am,” David pleads heavenward. God answers in this action-packed series, available now on Amazon Prime Video.
In Episode 60 of the Faith Film Fan Podcast, House Of David director Jon Erwin—known for I Can Only Imagine, Jesus Revolution, Moms’ Night Out, and Woodlawn—shares with host Rick Altizer what inspired him to create this show.
“The quest to the story of David was started when I was 16 years old,” Jon says. “I went to Israel with my dad and stayed in the old city of Jerusalem. The Bible came to life in a way that was unbelievable to me. I remember going to King David’s tomb and it was just amazing. That’s where it started.”
House Of David was filmed in the lush landscape of Greece. From the first episode, viewers are instantly drawn into the spectacle of the giant Goliath, his challenger David, the vast Philistine army, cunning King Saul, and the ancient prophet Samuel.
“God uses complicated, flawed people,” Jon says. “That’s the theme of House Of David. I feel like a part of it. I feel like I fail much more than I succeed.”
With eight episodes and close to 700 people working on it, House Of David was a mammoth undertaking by Jon Erwin, co-creator Jon Gunn, and The Wonder Project. “It was like making multiple movies all at once,” Erwin says.
In the series, Michael Iskander portrays young King David. “I think Michael shines in the role,” Erwin says. “And the confrontation with David and Goliath is something I’ll take with me for a long time.”
David finds his purpose with the help of Samuel: “You have the heart of a lion. What do lions do? Roar!”
