Meet Mykelti Williamson

Written By: Bob Gordon

If you haven’t had a chance yet to experience the Faith Film Fan Podcast featuring Mykelti Williamson, know this: it’s a fun listen! And if you haven’t seen Mykelti in the new Angel release THE LAST RODEO, go see it!

Mykelti is forever known for his role as Bubba in Forrest Gump. But did you know he’s acted in more than 100 movies? It’s something he tells FFF Podcast host Rick Altizer he doesn’t take for granted.

“It’s a privilege to do what we do, to make movies for you (the fans). It’s definitely a service industry for me,” Mykelti says. “It’s a service to the audience as the final analysis. But that’s what it is, man. And if you do it right, you can make a good living while you’re at it. But you never forget the audience. That’s the most important part.”

But more than all of the movies he’s been in, Mykelti wants to be known for being a follower of Jesus.

“I was raised in church. And every Sunday I was in church, but church wasn’t always in me. You know, I was a mischievous little kid growing up in the South,” he says. … “So that’s kind of a standard that was poured into me when I was a kid. But I became real serious when I met someone who lived their life for Christ for real. I met a gentleman by the name of Dwight. And the way Dwight lived his life and carried himself, he was so serious about Jesus, but not in some like put-off kind of way, like preaching to people. … ‘You can see how I live. You tell me if I am or not. I’m not telling you that. You tell me, brother. Look at my works. Look at my life.’ So that’s the way he lived.

“I said, ‘Man, I don’t know what it is you have, brother, but I want that.’ I’ve got all the money. I’ve got the nice, expensive car. I’m single. I got money in the bank. But I don’t have that. What is that? He said, ‘That’s Jesus.’ … And he broke it down, and I was like, okay, I’m in. And so I’ve been in ever since, and I’m authentic with mine, you know what I mean?”

Can we encourage you to find 20 minutes to listen to Mykelti on the Faith Film Fan Podcast? We have a feeling it will truly encourage you!
