Nearly a quarter-century after THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST made history in theaters across the U.S. and around the world, the long-hoped-for sequel has finally been announced!
Arriving as two separate movies, both releasing in the spring of 2027, THE RESURRECTION OF THE CHRIST will once again have Mel Gibson directing. Part One comes out March 26, 2027, and Part Two arrives—fittingly—40 days later on May 6, 2027. Both are expected to be spectacular, awe-inspiring, epic films!
While you won’t find many (any?) details on the website, it’s worth a visit to access the links to the movie’s socials—and to hear the music on the site. Lionsgate will release the films.
The head of Lionsgate, Adam Fogelson, was quoted in Variety saying:
“For many, many people across the globe, THE RESURRECTION OF THE CHRIST is the most-anticipated theatrical event in a generation. It is also an awe-inspiring and spectacularly epic theatrical film that is going to leave moviegoers worldwide breathless.”
Starring Jim Caviezel as Jesus, THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST released in theaters on February 25, 2004. On opening weekend, it did nearly $84 million in box office. Overall, it finished at more than $370 million in the U.S. and $622 million worldwide.
While it received an R-rating from the MPA “for sequences of graphic violence,” audiences flocked to the theaters to watch the final hours of Christ’s life on earth played out on the big screen. In fact, for 20 years, it was the highest grossing R-rated movie in history.
Soon, not one, but two sequels are headed our way, albeit nearly 18 months from now. Let us know in the comments section if you are excited the experience THE RESURRECTION OF THE CHRIST, Parts One & Two when they arrive in theaters in the spring of 2027!
